Singing Solutions Workshop

On Saturday, February 1st 2003, I was fortunate to be present at Tosini's workshop for singing teachers presented by the charity's president Paul Farrington. This interactive workshop entitled 'Singing Solutions' did exactly that!
The day began with what looked on paper a rather daunting 90-minute session on 'The Anatomy of the Voice' and 'The Application of Anatomy and Physiology in the Teaching Studio'. However, much to my relief, Paul Farrington, with the assistance of his 'Larissa the Larynx' and 'Betty the Tongue' models, made this session completely understandable to all!
This was an invaluable session as it gave us a clear understanding of the structure and terms needed to fully understand the workings of the singing voice.
After a coffee break, we were treated to an audio-visual presentation which portrayed many different types of singing qualities, from Enrique Iglesias to Janet Baker!!! Paul Farrington then demonstrated how to use and safely reproduce these styles of singing which we all tried, although I don't think that there were too many pop idols among us!
After a delicious lunch, the afternoon session began with diagnosing various vocal problems which we, as teachers, meet every day in the teaching studio. From breathy tone to singing flat, Paul helped us work through the causes and remedies for a myriad of problems, leaving us all feeling very well equipped to tackle the most problematic of voices.
The final session was extremely interesting as Paul Farrington worked directly with three very brave singers. It was extraordinary to see Paul just adjusting several small points of posture and vocal technique resulting in the singers producing a much-improved sound in every case. He showed us that by adapting an anatomical and physiological approach to teaching that all of the singers' vocal technique could be improved in a very short amount of time.
For the people who were present, it was agreed that the workshop was invaluable, and thanks to Paul Farrington's great ability to share his knowledge with us, I think that we all have much more to offer as teachers now. J.H.
